  26.             NorthWestNet  is  a  regional  (mid-level)  network  of  the
  27.             National  Science Foundation Network (NSFNet) providing com-
  28.             munication with NSFNet for knowledge-based organizations  in
  29.             Alaska,   Washington,  Oregon,  Idaho,  Montana,  and  North
  30.             Dakota.  Member organizations include higher  education  and
  31.             K-12   institutions,   scientific  laboratories,  libraries,
  32.             health care facilities, and industrial research units.   The
  33.             mission  of  NorthWestNet is to promote research, education,
  34.             and economic development by providing access to network com-
  35.             munications,  computing  and  electronic information systems
  36.             and services throughout the Northwest.  Financial support of
  37.             NorthWestNet  comes  from  National Science Foundation (NSF)
  38.             grants, institutional membership dues, and  network  service
  39.             fees.    NorthWestNet   is   a  not-for-profit  organization
  40.             operated by the  Northwest  Academic  Computing  Consortium,
  41.             Inc.  (NWACC).   This  consortium of NorthWestNet members is
  42.             governed by a Board of Directors  elected  from  representa-
  43.             tives  of  member  organizations.  There are three operating
  44.             committees made up of  member  organization  representatives
  45.             focusing  on  Management,  Technical Services, and User Ser-
  46.             vices.

  48.             The Technical Services Committee is responsible for  review-
  49.             ing  and  recommending  technical directions of the network.

  67.             Currently, the network is based upon  the  TCP/IP  protocol.
  68.             Network  Operations Center (NOC) services are provided under
  69.             subcontract by the University of Washington's Computing  and
  70.             Communications.   The  NOC provides network engineering ser-
  71.             vices, 24-hour-a-day monitoring of  the  network,  diagnosis
  72.             and  repair,  Domain  Name Service, and other technical ser-
  73.             vices necessary for ensuring the  operational  integrity  of
  74.             the regional network.

  76.             The User Services Committee  focuses  on  documentation  and
  77.             training  issues  as  they  relate  to  use of the Internet.
  78.             Vehicles for providing these services include the following:
  79.             the  NorthWestNet  User Services Information Resource Guide,
  80.             Node News quarterly newsletter, and the NorthWestNet  annual
  81.             meeting.   The  NorthWestNet User Services Internet Resource
  82.             Guide is updated biannually and is  available  either  in  a
  83.             hardbound  published  version  (contact  the  administrative
  84.             office for ordering information) or  via  anonymous  ftp  at
  85.             ftphost.nwnet.net  in  the  directory  nic/nwnet/user-guide.
  86.             The Node News newsletter gives up-to-date reports on current
  87.             NorthWestNet  activities.   The  Annual Meeting sponsored by
  88.             NorthWestNet highlights Internet resources and services  and
  89.             offers discipline-specific workshops.  Several new User Ser-
  90.             vices offerings are under development including  an  on-line
  91.             information  center,  specialized  training  programs, and a
  92.             documentation database.

  94.             The Internet connection  provided  to  NorthWestNet  members
  95.             brings  a  plethora  of services including access to a wide-
  96.             variety of databases, text, and information  services;  pro-
  97.             gram  repositories;  information  mediators  such as archie,
  98.             gopher, WAIS, and world-wide  web;  supercomputers;  Usenet,
  99.             listserv,  and  internet  interest  group forums; and a mail
  100.             gateway machine.  NorthWestNet  members  also  enjoy  common
  101.             access   services   to   for-fee  database  and  information
  102.             resources via an on-line license management system.
